In Germany there is a saying, “the caravan moves on” which describes, for instance,
a crowd of people who moves en masse from one party to the next, or swarms of
insects who seek out new fields after eating all the fruit from another. This series is
about a strange and very particular form of tourism, the Group Tour. The participants
in all these tour groups appear to behave in similar ways and they move methodically
all over the world. They seem to be without individuality and function only as singular
entities, these tourist caravans.
Typically they manage to take over every space and inevitably squeeze other visitors
aside. As they arrive at a place they file out of their busses, listen attentively to
information, pose for photos and disappear away to the next site as suddenly as they
appeared. Back on their busses, they discuss lunch and television as they prepare for
the next location where the same procedure will start again.
